The Swabain Alb
Inspired. Since time immemorial
Rough rocky landscapes, colorful orchards, idyllic juniper heaths, small towns worth seeing and caves – all of this defines the Swabian Alb. 200 million years of geological history and 40,000 years of human history are waiting to be discovered.
Since the Paleolithic, man has left monuments from all eras here: pile dwellings from the Neolithic, gigantic Celtic towns, Roman border walls, Alamannic pieces of jewelry, fortresses of the Hohenstaufen and Hohenzollern families and, finally, the ingenious inventions of the inventors of the industrial age. Just as unique are the beauty scars of the millions of years of geological history in the Swabian Alb: volcanic vents, meteor craters, cave labyrinths, deep blue spring pots and fossilized dinosaurs. Everywhere in the region, sagas and legends entwine around stone-old walls. Enough material for culture-loving guests of the Swabian Alb.
The geological history of the Swabian Alb is as diverse as hardly any other landscape in Central Europe. It is not only a history book turned into stone, but also the region with the most caves in Germany. Where is it still possible today to experience different epochs and phenomena in the history of the earth that have lasted for over 200 million years directly and in all their diversity? Admittedly, you won't come across living dinosaurs here either, but with unique fossil excavations, the caves of the oldest ice age art and even a meteorite crater you can experience the history of the earth live.
The Swabian Alb is one of the most castles and palaces in Germany, because two imperial families - the Staufer and the Hohenzollern - come from here. Visible from afar, the imposing buildings sit enthroned on peaks and hilltops, on the edges of valleys and cliffs. And rulers like the Romans, Celts or Alemanni have left numerous visible traces.
Churches and monasteries are considered to be spiritual centers, many are architectural treasures and outstanding sights in the Swabian Alb. Artfully embedded in the landscape or a town center, the numerous churches, chapels and monasteries with splendid altars, choirs or frescoes bear witness to an artistic past. They offer the guest a place of contemplation and wonder.
